Born in 1972, from Mie Prefecture.
At the age of 12, he had his left leg amputated due to osteosarcoma and began living in a wheelchair. He has participated in six consecutive Paralympic Games since the 1996 Atlanta Games. At the 2004 Athens Paralympics, he won a gold medal in the men’s doubles with Shingo Kunieda, and at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, he won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles.
In 2003, he became the first Japanese player to receive the International Tennis Federation (ITF) ‘World Wheelchair Tennis Player Award,’ and is one of Japan’s leading top players.
In 2016, he participated in his sixth Paralympic Games at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, where he won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles with Shingo Kunieda.
